Olde Swords Reign

As a disclaimer I was part of the beta testing.

Why play Old Swords Reign? If you like 5e then you will enjoy the experience that OSR can deliver (Old Swords Reign NOT to be confused with Old School Renaissance).

  1. Same System, Cleaner rules. OSR cuts out a lot of inambigious language found in 5e material, gives you simple DCs that can make games keep running like flowing water due to the simple math.

  2. This is not a hardcore fatal game, Player Characters simply start at a lower power level but with a smooth curve to compensate. The flexibility of using a pool of features to choose from leads to playing the character YOU want rather than getting a massive list of features you will forget as they do not fit your characters concept.

  3. Exploration rules that make the game happen. The rules for travelling in OSR are not just a suggestion but a framework for organic play that will even surprise you as the DM if you let the players take the reigns. An elegant system that practically plays itself if you have a map and the players have a destination.

  4. Features PCs have access to are kept simple, concise and will hardly ever require the players to read them twice.

  5. More modularity. 5e was meant to be a modular game at it's birth, but due to the many rules that classes would pile ontop of the system even at low levels this would be next to impossible without a perfect understanding of the system to prevent breakage. OSR does not have this problem and taht is it's true secret strength, this really is the best ruleslite 5e interpretation if homebrew is your main desire.

The bad.

  1. Features can sometimes be too simple, there is something to be said for the spicerack of options 5e has over the years presented. It is not a fair comparison given how long 5e has been out for, but there are not many features besides the random flaw table that will have you doing backflips out of your chair. Ofcourse this is debatable as having too many spicy feats will bog the game down.

Thank you Luke for the Review, I really appreciate it. "the best ruleslite 5e interpretation" is high praise indeed and don't worry about the features there are plans for more goodies in future releases.

By far one of the worst RPG books I have ever read.

Setting is insultingly stupid and poorly thought out, the authors are so arrogant they think witty remarks about modern progressive politics makes up for the massive lack of information about gods being public, yet history remains the same. Protip: Leave out realworld politics in your alternative earth. Character creation is impossible to understand, my group have a combined experience of atleast 60 years between us with storyteller and none of us could make sense of it. Combat is broken, every attack is basically the same and armour is convoluted. Extremely dissapointing. More than 20 years to get it right and this actually makes v20 look innovative.

We played this for 3 months and gave up out of sheer frustration, as players and a very dissapointed ST.

Five videos in so far, will update after finishing. New to ttrpg design, I've dabbled for a few years as hobbyist listening to any and all free podcasts/videos on design. This though is by far the best resource I've seen, information is consice and will completely change how you percieve why you are designing games.
